Justine Macfee is the founder and principal of JMID, an interior design studio creating highly personal residences shaped by architecture, art, craftsmanship and a strong sense of place. With more than 17 years of experience leading complex residential projects, Justine brings a deeply considered approach to ground up homes, significant renovations and complete interiors throughout California, Lake Tahoe and beyond.
Known for interiors that feel collected rather than prescribed, JMID approaches each project as an opportunity to create something singular to the people who live there. Architecture, material, color, art and objects are considered together, resulting in homes that are layered, expressive and designed to evolve over time.
Before founding JMID, Justine spent more than a decade working alongside celebrated interior designer Catherine Macfee, becoming a partner in Catherine Macfee Interior Design in 2013. That experience shaped her understanding of the craft, rigor and relationships required to bring exceptional residential projects to life, while allowing Justine to develop a design perspective distinctly her own.
She also credits her studies at California College of the Arts in Interior Architecture and Design for her attention to craft, detail and rigor. Justine's work has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Luxe Interiors + Design, Mountain Living and other publications.
At the heart of JMID is a belief that the most memorable homes are not defined by a particular style. They are personal, unexpected and deeply connected to how her clients want to live.
The Studio Team
JMID is a collaborative interior design studio led by founder and principal Justine Macfee. Our team brings together senior design leadership, associate designers and dedicated project and procurement support to guide residences from early concept through construction, furnishing and installation.
We work closely across every layer of a project, from architectural coordination and material development to custom fabrication, purchasing and final installation. This integrated studio structure allows us to manage the complexity of significant residential projects while maintaining a highly personal design process.
Principal and Creative Director
Justine leads the creative direction of every JMID project and remains closely involved throughout the design process. Working alongside the studio team, she guides the overarching vision, key architectural and material decisions, furnishings, art and the details that ultimately give each residence its individual character.
Senior Design
Senior design leadership supports the development and execution of each project, working closely with Justine to carry the creative vision through detailed design, documentation, coordination and construction.
Associate Designers
Our associate designers work across material development, furnishings, custom pieces, documentation and project coordination, supporting the many layers required to bring a complete residence together.
Project Procurement
Dedicated project procurement support oversees purchasing, vendor communication, logistics, tracking and installation, helping ensure that the design is carried through from specification to final placement.
Selective by Design
JMID intentionally maintains a select portfolio of projects so that every residence receives meaningful attention from Justine and the senior studio team.
Our scale allows us to be deeply involved, highly responsive and closely connected to the architects, builders, craftspeople and consultants behind each project, while providing the infrastructure required to execute complex residences from concept through completion.
